影片中的主人公克里斯·加德纳，因贫穷的生活使妻子落跑，只剩下一个人近中年的男人带着儿子在大街上风餐露宿，为了让儿子有正常的上学环境。卖血、跑好几条街寻找流浪汉——那人抢走只能给他换几餐饭的医疗仪器，但他从未放弃，哪怕风餐露宿，一路上克里斯经历了不少挫折，但是年幼的儿子每次都能给予他最大的鼓励，两父子相互扶持最终完成自己的梦想。(该影片改编自发生在独立宣言后的真实故事)
